August 28th.
Lions: the Matshapiri males and the Eyrefield pride joined up overnight and kill a buffalo in central Flockfield. 4 leopards: the Treehouse male didn’t waste time sulking over his stolen kill from yesterday- he killed an impala south of Main Camp. The Island female was at Maurice’s Pan. The Kikilezi female was at Elephant Rock. The Bicycle Crossing male and 22 cape hunting dogs were viewed at Charleston North. Many elephants and buffalo were seen.
August 27th. 2 lion sightings: the 2 Matshapiri males were seen ‘interacting’ with a disgruntled hippo and then they chased the Treehouse male leopard off of his kill. The Eyrefield pride were at Styx Waterhole. 2 leopards: the Treehouse male and the Island female were both seen. A whopping 4 honey badgers were viewed today as well as a sable antelope bull. Many elephants and buffalo sightings were recorded.
August 26th. Lions: the 2 Clarendon males were viewed close to Main Camp. 2 leopards: the Kikilezi female was at Elephant Rock having left her cubs to hunt. The Lookout female was seen near Styx Crossing- her behavior suggests that she may have lost her cub. Cape hunting dogs: the pack of 22 was followed in the south on a successful hunt which culminated in them killing a duiker. A herd of buffalo and many elephants were also seen.
August 25th. 2 lion sightings: the Matshapiri males were found in central Flockfield. 5 members of the Marthly pride spent the day in front of Main Camp. 4 leopards: both cubs of the Kikilezi female were also seen close to Main Camp. An unidentified female leopard is on an impala kill in Charleston. Another unidentified female leopard was viewed near West Street Pans. Cape hunting dogs: the pack of 22 was seen in the south. Many elephant and buffalo bull sightings were recorded.
August 24th. 2 lion sightings: the Matshapiri males have reunited with the Eyrefield pride and they’re all feeding on a buffalo kill in north eastern Flockfield. 5 members of the Marthly pride finished off their buffalo kill from yesterday and spent the day in front of Main Camp. 8 leopards: the Bicycle Crossing male has an impala kill north and east of Rattray’s Camp. The Tamboti female was at Wildebeest Crossing. The Island female was south of Main Camp. The cubs of the Kikilezi female were also seen close to Main Camp. The Accipiter male was viewed at Matshapiri Open Area. The cub of the Lookout female was seen at Hyena Waterhole. The aging Matshapiri female made a rare appearance, she was viewed along the Matshapiri River. Many elephant and buffalo sightings were also recorded.
August 23rd. Yet another MalaMala 7 day which included adrenaline pumping lion vs buffalo action! 2 lion sightings: the Eyrefield pride brought down a buffalo cow this evening in central Flockfield. 5 members of the Marthly pride are feeding off a buffalo kill near Mlowathi Pans. 5 leopards: the Accipiter male was viewed with an unidentified female at Matshapiri Open Area. The Tamboti female is still feeding off her impala kill south of Main Camp. The Kikilezi female was seen in the heart of Marthly. The Emsagweni female was at Buffalo Bush Dam. Cheetah: the 2 brothers were found at Clarendon Open Area. Cape hunting dogs: the pack of 3 was viewed in the north. A herd of buffalo as well as many elephant sightings were also recorded today.
August 21st. A fantastic MalaMala 7 day! 3 lion sightings: 5 members of the Marthly pride brought down a buffalo close to Main Camp. The Eyrefield pride were in central Flockfield. The 2 Matshapiri males are feeding off a buffalo kill in along Piccadilly Road. 3 leopards: an unidentified male leopard was found at Campbell Koppies with klipspringer kill. The Tamboti female and her daughter, the Island female, were viewed together with an impala kill south of Main Camp. Cheetah: the 2 brothers were seen at Clarendon Open Area. Cape hunting dogs: 2 individuals were viewed at Charleston North Crossing. Many elephants and buffalo bulls were seen as well as a sable antelope bull!
August 20th. 3 lion sightings: the 2 Matshapiri males are in the Sand River south of Main Camp. The Eyrefied pride have reappeared and they were viewed at Drum Crossing. 5 members of the Marthly pride were in the central parts of Marthly. 6 leopards: the Island female was close to Main Camp. The DOKF 3:3 was seen in Marthly. The Kikilezi female and both her cubs were viewed with an impala kill at Elephant Rock. An unidentified male leopard was viewed near Rattray’s Camp. Cape hunting dogs: the pack of 3 was on our airstrip. Many elephants were seen as well as a herd of buffalo.
