June 5th 

 3 lion sightings: we witnessed yet another double buffalo kill today as the Eyrefield pride and 2 Matshapiri males brought down a cow and calf north of Rattray’s Camp. The Sand River pride and the Toulon male are still feeding off their 2 buffalo kills. The Styx pride and 5 cubs are also on a buffalo kill. Leopards: the Toulon female was viewed in the south. Cheetah: 1 cheetah was viewed around our airstrip. Sable antelope: the herd of 16 was viewed in eastern Flockfield. 2 herds of buffalo and many elephants were viewed.

June 4th. 3 lion sightings: the Sand River pride and the Toulon male treated us to an adrenaline filled sighting as we watched them bring down 2 buffalo in Charleston. The Eyrefield pride and 2 Matshapiri males are still feeding off their giraffe kill. The 3 Styx lionesses were seen in the north. 3 leopards: the Island female and No ID female were seen separately but both near Main Camp. The Bicycle Crossing male was at Charleston North. Cheetah: Exciting times as 2 new males were viewed in the north. 2 sable antelope sightings: the herd of 16 continue to enthrall us with their presence on MalaMala. A lone bull was also viewed. 2 herds of buffalo and countless elephant sightings.

 

June 3rd. 2 lion sightings: the 2 Matshapiri males have joined the Eyrefield pride with their giraffe kill. 3 members of the Marthly pride were opposite Main Camp. 6 leopards: the Emsagweni female and 1 cub were viewed in Emsagwen Open Area. The Kikilezi female and her 2 cubs are at Bicycle Crossing. The Treehouse male was near West Street Bridge. Cheetah: the 2 brothers were in the north east. Sable antelope: 1 bull drank from the Sand River in front of Rattray’s Camp. A herd of buffalo as well as many elephant sightings were recorded.

 

June 2nd. 3 lion sightings: the Eyrefield pride killed a large male giraffe north of Drum Crossing. 3 members of the Marthly pride were near Main Camp. The Fourways pride were at the Windmill. 5 leopards: the Bicycle Crossing male was at Charleston North. The Kikilezi female and her 2 cubs are on a bushbuck kill near Main Camp. The Emsagweni female is still feeding off her impala kill. Cheetah: the 2 brothers were viewed at Clarendon. Sable antelope: the herd of 16 was seen in eastern Flockfield. 2 herds of buffalo were found as well as many elephant sightings. A honey badger was also viewed at Mlowathi Dam.

 

June 1st. A rare day with no lion sightings but our leopards came to the party. 8 leopards: the Bicycle Crossing male killed a warthog at the confluence of the Rock Drift Donga and the Sand River. The Lookout female was at Kapen Rocks. The Emsagweni female has an impala kill in a tree with many hyenas in the area. The Tamboti female was on the Old Airstrip. The Island female was near Main Camp and the Kikilezi female and her two cubs were also found. A herd of buffalo and many elephants were viewed.

 

May 30th. 3 lion sightings: we got our first glimpse today of a +- 1 month old Styx cub who was in the presence of it’s mother and 1 of the Gowrie males in our northern boundary. The Eyrefield pride and their 4 cubs were on a kudu kill along the Kapen River. The 2 Charleston males were viewed in the south. 3 leopards: the Bicycle Crossing male was opposite Rattray’s Camp. The Island female and Tamboti female were in Ambush Alley. A herd of 16 sable antelope were seen as well as a lone bull. 3 herds of buffalo and many elephant sightings were recorded.
